Moor Mag Interview: June/July Edition
When they went kitchen shopping Susan & Andy from Heaton Moor had a very clear idea about what they wanted, but a visit to Urban Haus Kitchen Design Studio Before changed everything.
Susan explains: "We visited several kitchen showrooms, but Urban Haus was the one that most impressed us. We liked Jill [co-owner and lead kitchen designer] instantly, but seeing working features as well as the solid construction of the kitchens they sell was impressive. Unexpectedly, we both fell in love with a very contemporary, handleless, kitchen in one of the Urban Haus brochures.”
With a new extension across the back of their property, the couple had a generous space to fill, so having chosen Graphite Black PUR matt doors with Spessart Oak veneer from the German manufacturer Ballerina, they opted for floor to ceiling cupboards to maximise the space, hide the built-in fridge and freezer and give a very stylish, modern look.
It's far more sociable than when! was stuck cooking in a different room from everyone else.(and as Susan pointed out, with the added bonus, of no more cleaning the tops of cupboards!).
The look works beautifully round the lower units too, with both a dishwasher and pull-out bins integrated, but it's the number of wide deep drawers that Susan particularly loves: "They glide beautifully, but also they are incredibly solid so I keep a huge amount of crockery in one and have pans in another, but my favourite is the one with a double layer - a shallow one for cutlery on top and then all the utensils underneath."
The 'bar' area was something that Andy (an architect) had already designed, but both agree was huge enhanced by the crittall-fronted, back lit cupboards, that mirror the room's crittall garden doors and really pull the whole room together.
Details such as using warm lighting in the bar cupboards, small touches of wood to highlight features, and picking a worktop with a vein of rust colour running through it, all work well as a contrast to the striking graphite black of the kitchen and bring a warmth that means the room is always welcoming as well as being super-stylish.
Urban Haus laid the stunning parquet floor (in keeping with those contrasting warm tones) as well as fitting the kitchen. "The attention to detail and the exactness of the fit was vital for our style of kitchen, but again Urban Haus didn't disappoint.
We have ended up with a kitchen beyond anything I had imagined and I honestly wouldn't change a single thing about it!"
